Education Classes

Alcohol Education for Adults: (DUI/DWI) is an 8-hour alcohol education class for adult DUI offenders ages 21 and older.  The goal of this program is reduce the incidence of alcohol- and other drug-related problems.  This nationally recognized and evidence-based program focuses on personal risk-reduction (choices) and self-assessment specifically related to alcohol.  The program is voluntary, however, many adults are referred by court or probation for Driving Under the Influence (first offense) or another first-time alcohol- or other drug-related offense.  Cost is $75.  Pre-registration is necessary.  This class is also offered in Spanish.

 

Alcohol Education for Minors: (MIP) is an 8-hour alcohol education class for youth ages 20 and younger.  The goal of this program is reduce the incidence of alcohol- and other drug-related problems in youth.  This nationally recognized and evidence-based program focuses on personal risk-reduction (choices) and self-assessment specifically related to alcohol.  The program is voluntary; however, many youth are referred by probation or juvenile services for a Minor-In-Possession of Alcohol (first offense) or another first-time alcohol- or other drug-related offense.  Cost is $65; school referrals are welcome at a reduced rate.  Pre-registration is necessary.  This class is also offered in Spanish.
 
Spanish Alcohol Education:  A 6-hour class offered every other month.  This class is most appropriate for individuals who are DUI or MIP offenders that have been referred to take an alcohol education course.  The cost of this class is $75.  Please call 308-385-5520 to register.
 
Driving the Right Way: is a nationally recognized, evidence-based program designed for repeat DUI/DWI offenders, challenging the thought- and decision-making process related to drinking and driving choices.  Cost is $100, or $80 if paid in cash in full at the first class session.  Class size is limited; pre-registration is necessary. 
 
Marijuana Education for Adults: is an education class for adults ages 21 and older, emphasizing risks associated with illegal drugs such as Marijuana and Methamphetamine.  The goal of this program is reduce the incidence of alcohol- and other drug-related problems.  The program is voluntary; however, many adults are referred by court or probation for a Possession of Marijuana (first offense), a failed drug test at a place of employment, or another first-time drug-related offense.  Cost is $80; Pre-registration is necessary.  (Minimum of 2.5 hours)

 

Marijuana Education for Minors: is an education class for youth ages 20 and younger, emphasizing risks associated with illegal drugs such as Marijuana and Methamphetamine.  The goal of this program is reduce the incidence of alcohol- and other drug-related problems in youth.  The program is voluntary; however, many youth are referred by probation or juvenile services for a Possession of Marijuana (first offense) or another first-time drug-related offense.  Cost is $60.   Pre-registration is necessary.  (Minimum of 2.5 hours)
 
Tobacco Education for Minors: will assist youth in learning about tobacco use and offer an opportunity for help in quitting for those already addicted.   This class is facilitated by Donna Pierce, a certified instructor using curricula from the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, and the American Heart Association.  Cost is $40.  Pre-registration is necessary.  (Minimum of 2.5 hours)
 
Smoking Cessation: will assist people in learning about tobacco use and offer an opportunity for help in quitting for those already addicted.   This program consists of four 1-hour sessions facilitated by Donna Pierce, a certified instructor using curricula from the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, and the American Heart Association.  Cost is $40 for the series.   Pre-registration is necessary.
 
 Kids Power!
 
A free 8-week educational series for children ages 6-12 who are affected by a loved one's addiction.  This program is based on materials developed and used by Jerry Moe, director of children's programs at the Betty Ford Treatment Center. 
It is designed to help children:
  • explore and express feelings in a safe environment
  • understand addiction in an age-appropriate way
  • learn a variety of problem-solving, coping and self-  care strategies
  • build self-esteem, self-worth, and positive feelings about themselves
  • realize they are not alone
  • simply be kids by learning to have fun in safe and healthy ways

 

Each session is 1.5 hours in length, and will meet at the Council on Alcoholism and Addictions, 219 W. 2nd St., in Grand Island.  Pre-registration is required.  Please call CNCAA at 308-385-5520 to register your child(ren), or for more information.

 

A new series will begin Tuesday, January 3rd and meet each Tuesday through February 21st from 5:30pm-7:00pm. (A light dinner will be provided.) Each session will be held at the Council offices at 219 West 2nd Street.The series will conclude with a Family Celebration.

TEEN POWER!

 

 

Is a free, educational program for youth ages 13-17 who are affected by a loved one’s addiction.   This program is based on materials developed and used by Jerry

Moe, director of Children’s Programs at the Betty Ford Centers, and is designed to help teens:

 

·                     Understand addiction in an age-appropriate way

·                     Explore and express feelings in a safe and supportive environment

·                     Learn a variety of problem-solving, coping, and self-care strategies

·                     Build self-esteem, self-worth, and positive feelings about themselves

·        Deal with peer pressure and practice refusal skills

  

                                  Teen Power group will be held in two sessions for a total of 6 hours.   Please plan to attend both sessions.  Pre-registration is required. This group will take place at the Council offices at

219 West 2nd Street
(downtown), Grand Island.
